The Role of The Sahaabah in Conveying The Message

The straight path is the path that the Messenger – the seal of the Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) was upon. There is no way to reach and achieve  paradise and win the pleasure of Allah except by following the footsteps of the Messenger  (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).

He who follows what the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) came with, is saved and has obtained the religion completely. He has won the pleasure of the Lord.  He who stays away from that which the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) came with, is destroyed and has lost greatly. The reason being,  Muhammad  (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is the conveyor on behalf of his Lord and the one who clarified what Allah wanted.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: “O Messenger proclaim and convey which was sent down to you from  your Lord ….”(Al-Ma’idah: 67).

He Subhanahu Wa Taala also says which translates as: “…..And we have also sent down on to you  a reminder and advise that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them….(An-Nahl: 44).

The Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) instructed his nation and taught them the book of Allah and the wisdom, which is his Sunnah. Allah said in the Qur’an reminding the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) of his favors upon him, which translates as: “Indeed Allah conferred a great favor on the believers when he sent amongst them a Messenger from amongst themselves, reciting on to them his verses and purifying them and instructing them in the book and the wisdom which is the Sunnah….”(Aal-Imraan: 164).

Allah described to the Messenger who made clear to them, what is lawful and what is unlawful: “….He allows them what is lawful, (at tayibaat), and prohibits them what is unlawful (al khabaaith)….” (Al-A’araf: 157).

The Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) was sent to the nation to judge between its people in their daily affairs and disputes. As Allah says which translates as: “It is not for a believer, man or woman when Allah and his Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision…”(Al-Ahzab36).

So no one’s faith is sound and correct until he makes Allah and the Prophet  (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) the criterion in the ruling of his affairs, without having resistance against it and accepting it with full submission.

As Allah says which translates as: “But no, by  your Lord, they can have no faith until they make you (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) judge in all their disputes between them and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions and accept them  with full submission”  (An-Nisa’: 65).

Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala sent the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) with Islam, the seal of all messages, to rule and judge between people. Allah says which translates as: “Surely we have sent down to you (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)  the book in truth  that you might  judge between men by that which Allah has shown you….”(An-Nisa’: 105). It is for these reasons that Allah chose the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), as an example  and a model for all believers.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for the meeting with Allah and the last day and remembers Allah much” (Al-Ahzab: 21).

That is why Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala commanded us to follow the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). Allah says which translates as: “….So believe in Allah and his Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believes in Allah and his words (Qur’an, the Torah and the Gospel), and follow him so that you may be guided”  (Al-A’raf: 158).

There is no way leading and guiding to Allah, except following the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: “Say (O Muhammad), if you love Allah then follow me Allah will love you …” (Aal Imraan:31).   That is why Allah combined the obedience of the Messenger with His obedience and tightened the bond between them. Allah says  which translates as : And obey Allah and his Messenger…”(Al-Anfal: 46). He also says which translates as: “He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah…” (An-Nisa’: 80).

So how can a Muslim imagine a way that can lead to Allah other than the way of Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)? How can a sensible man imagine that he does not need what the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) came with? How can any believer imagine that he can remain a believer, while thinking that he does not need the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)?

Allah explained to us that there is no way leading to him, or winning his pleasure except by following the Prophet (Sulla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). Whoever stays away from what the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) came with is destroyed and has lost his  way.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala warned those who strayed away from the way  of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) and his Sunnah when he says   which translates as: “…And let those who oppose the Messengers commandment, (his Sunna legal ways, orders acts of worship, etc.) beware lest some fitnah, (disbelief, trials, affictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them” (An-Nur: 63).

The Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is the conveyor and the proclaimer  on behalf of Allah, therefore, he is the connection between us and our Lord Subhanahu Wa Taala. Likewise, the honorable  companions of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) were the connections between us and the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).

Allah chose the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) from amongst his creatures to convey and proclaim His message on His behalf. Allah also chose the companions of Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). They are the best people after the Prophet, – in their high thinking, in the purity of their souls and in the piety of their hearts.

They preserved what he (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) conveyed to them from the words of the Lord. They preserved and conveyed the Sunnah (his words, actions and all personal and general deeds) of the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). They were entrusted with it, they were scholars  who were knowledgeable and understood the religion of Allah.

Allah preserved that which was revealed to the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) from the Qur’an, and what was revealed to him from the Sunnah through them. May Allah be pleased with them and reward them the best of reward on behalf of the entireUmmah.

After what has been said, how could a Muslim imagine that he can continue without this noble and honorable mediation and connection? How can he reject the mediation and connection through the companions? How can he obtain the religion without it?

A Muslim should never think that he can reject the connection and the mediation of the honorable companions, nor should he ever think to belittle and dishonor the companions. The Jews and the Magis and their followers did think in this way and penetrated into  the ranks of the Islamic nation  in the early times, with the objective of destroying and ruining the believers. They knew  that there was no way to know  the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) and the Shariah (Allah’s Laws and legislation) but through these honorable companions. This was because they (the companions) were the ones who obeyed and proclaimed the words of Allah.

The Qur’an was conveyed and proclaimed by the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) and the companions conveyed and proclaimed to us the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).  Upon these two pillars – Islam was built. So how can anyone reject the mediation and connection of the honorable companions, without which, the entire religion would have vanished and would have been destroyed.

The Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) perfectly conveyed and proclaimed the message on behalf of his Lord and this was the mediation and connection between the Muslims and their Lord. The companions as well conveyed and proclaimed the message on behalf of the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), perfectly and the best fashion. May Allah be pleased with them and reward them  with the best reward on behalf of this nation.

After all that has been said, we clearly state what the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said when describing the way that would lead to salvation, he  said: “What I and my companions are upon”. This is a very famous hadith that is in the books of the famous scholars of hadith. There are many narrations of      the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) warning of the break up  and division of the nation into sects. He then guided  the believers to the group that would be saved, because of his mercy to his nation.

He said (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) in a Hadith narrated by Al Imam Ibn Majah and Ibn Abi Aswim reported by A’auf Ibnu Malik (Radhiyallahu Anhu). The Jews divided into seventy one sects, and the Christian divided into seventy two sects and my nation will be divided  into seventy three sects. All of them are in fire  except for one, which will be in paradise, so they said who is this rescued and saved group, O Messenger of Allah? He said: What I am upon and my companions” Then he (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) gave another name to this group when he called  it Al Jamaah. In the Hadith that is mentioned in the book of Al Imam Ahmad, he said “It is Al Jama’ah”, he said if you want to get to paradise then adhere and stick to Al Jamaah, meaning adhere to what the Messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) was upon and his honorable companions. May Allah be pleased with them.

We thank Allah for having guided us to Islam and we would not have been guided if it was not for the Guidance of Allah.

O Allah do not make our hearts go astray after you have guided us and grant us mercy and forgive our sins and the sins of our brothers who proceeded us in faith and do not put in our hearts hatred toward those who believe and forgive us. You are All Merciful.

One Response to The Role of The Sahaabah in Conveying The Message

  1. Sumaiyyah says:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised the Companions and warned Muslims against attacking or insulting them. For example, Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and other traditionalists relate from Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri that Allah’ s Messenger warned

Do not curse my Companions! Do not curse my Companions! I swear by Him in Whose Hand my life is, that even if one among you had as much gold as Mount Uhud and spent it in the way of Allah, this would not be equal in reward to a handful spent by them or even to its half.

May the Almighty Allah be pleased with them. ( ameen)
